Our History
The Permalab Institute was created in 2017 by three biologist professors. Dissatisfaction with the current reality of social inequality and environmental destruction was the driving force behind the creation of the Institute.
Os fundadores tinham o desejo de buscar caminhos para a construção de mudanças positivas. Com isso, o instituto nasce com o propósito de desenvolver práticas pedagógicas inovadoras e ações em rede, por meio da educação ambiental transformadora, da agricultura urbana e da popularização da agroecologia e da permacultura.

Iniciamos o projeto base do Instituto, o Escola Permacultural
Recebemos o convite para palestrar no TED sobre produção de alimentos na cidade
Integramos a Rede Carioca de Agricultura Urbana (Rede CAU)
Integramos o Conselho Municipal de Agricultura Urbana
2019
Our pedagogical methodology was recognized as a Social Technology by Banco do Brasil
2020
We launched our first book, Convergências Socioambientais, published by Editora Nupem
We launched our distance learning course for teacher training

Merger of Perma Lab Institute with Sustentarte
We created the Educommunication axis
In partnership with AS PTA, Quilombo do Camorim and Quilombo Cafundá Astrogilda, we launched 4 participatory documentaries promoting quilombola culture.
Our Mission
Promote positive socio-environmental transformations and contribute to the strengthening of territories in the global South.

We restarted the Green Formiga Project in Morro da Formiga in partnership with the FormigAção collective and support from Eletrobrás

Atuamos através de ações em rede e formulação de políticas públicas para o fortalecimento de uma agricultura urbana sustentável e garantia da soberania alimentar na cidade do Rio de Janeiro
We develop projects and actions related to environmental education, urban agriculture and the popularization of agroecology and permaculture. There are 4 areas of action: Transformative Education, Urban Agriculture, Meetings and Dialogues and Educommunication.
Participatory pedagogical methodologies are transversal to the 4 lines, aiming at popular and emancipatory education.
We always work in a network, collaborating to strengthen actions in partnership with community leaders, collectives, public bodies and universities.

Clara Trevia
Educommunication Coordinator
Filmmaker and pedagogue, she has been working in the third sector with socio-environmental projects since 2009. As an educator, she works on transformative projects for critical and emancipatory environmental education. She also produces documentary and institutional audiovisual productions to strengthen groups, organizations and social movements.
Golden France
Childhood Project Coordinator
Educator, Psychologist and specialist in Environmental Education from PUC-Rio, master in Community Psychosociology and Social Ecology - UFRJ. Researcher in the environmental field since 2012, part of the research groups Laboratory of Memories, Territories and Occupations - UFRJ and GEASur - UNIRIO researching on Community-Based Environmental Education. Educator in movement in Early Childhood Education since 2013.
Ana Souza
Project Manager
Biologist and educator, she holds a master's degree in ecology (PPGE -UFRJ) and is a PhD candidate in Ecology in the Postgraduate Program in Ecology - UFRJ. She has experience as a teacher in formal and informal teaching spaces. She develops research related to sustainable land use, conservation of plant populations, restoration of landscapes and forests, functional ecology, agroforestry systems and landscape ecology.
Anna Coimbra
Environmental Educator
Biologist from UFF, with a specialization in science and biology teaching from FE/UFRJ and MBE in Environment from COPPE/UFRJ, she completed her Master's degree in Community Psychosociology and Social Ecology from IP/UFRJ. A public school teacher and Environmental Educator in the third sector since 2014, she believes in political education, which contributes to the transformation of each person's individual and social reality through collective struggle.
Viviane Barbosa
Web developer
Graduated in Management with IT and specialization in Digital Business from USP. She joined the Permalab team as a volunteer in 2022 and believes that it is possible to find ways to balance meeting society's needs through the rational use of natural resources, without harming the environment.
